They were amongst the few people who could write at that time and so they are largely responsible for misspelling their own name and  giving rise to variations of the surname like Clerk, Clerke and of course, Clarke. Amongst the earliest recorded bearer of these names is “John Le Clerk” way, way back in 1275. You’ll find lots more intrigue amongst the cards!
